The gay men project
Sebastian first saw Adrian amidst the soft glow of their shared Airbnb, a quiet understanding dawning as they both navigated their gay identities openly within the modern LGBT landscape. Later, under a canopy of city lights, a shared glance blossomed into courage, a gentle acknowledgment of a nascent love that felt both deeply personal and beautifully universal. The Gay Men Project is a personal project by New York based photographer Kevin Truong. It is one of the single, largest collections of photographs and stories of gay and queer men in the world. When I did my crowd-funding campaign, I had to ask everyone I knew to donate to help fund the project. You've said that you feel like the more men you photograph, the more impact the project has. I’ve spent the past three years traveling around the world photographing gay men with the hope of sharing our stories. So far I’ve photographed over individuals in 49 cities, 14 countries, and five continents. More recently, my mom and I traveled to Vietnam, where I had set up a bunch of times to photograph gay men in Ho Chi Minh City. For the past two years Kevin Truong has traveled to cities across the world and photographed as many gay men as he can. So far he's photographed nearly men, in 15 cities, seven countries. The father of one of the men lived in the same house with them, too, so there were three generations of men living there. I enjoyed meeting him. For the past six years, I've dedicated myself to photographing the lives of gay and queer men across 90 cities, 37 countries, and six continents. From meeting and advising the All-Party Parliamentary Group to our annual march at Pride in London, our message has been clear: we exist, we thrive, and we refuse to be forgotten. It helps the viewer, whoever that is - people from around the world, people like my mom - who had never seen these visual representations of what a couple could be, what a marriage could be. And I relied on the support of that audience to help the project grow. Yes, but to me that showed that they were aware of the project and visiting it.
